‘Transformers’ Sequel Scores Big Win

LOS ANGELES — Horrid reviews couldn’t dent “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen,” which demonstrated once again the power of sequels by selling an estimated $201.2 million in tickets at North American theaters over its first five days.

The huge No. 1 entrance to the marketplace was on par with last summer’s Batman sequel, “The Dark Knight,” which sold $203.8 million in tickets over the same period and now ranks as one of the biggest blockbusters in movie history with over $1 billion in global sales. Overseas “Transformers” sold $186 million in tickets in its first five days.

The summer movie season has already seen some significant hits, among them a “Star Trek” reboot and “Up,” but it took a true sequel to break the bank. (“Terminator Salvation” and “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” while technically sequels, were more efforts to take franchises in new and unfamiliar directions in hopes of resuscitating them.)

People complain about Hollywood’s tendency to be unadventurous with its big-money titles, but the moviegoing masses clearly get the most excited when they are not being surprised. In other words, the multiplex really rocks when movies are served up the McDonalds way: predictably and comfortably.

“Transformers” is definitely that. This PG-13 picture, heavily reliant on computer-generated imagery, again centers on warring alien robots. The evil Decepticons return to Earth to hunt for an ancient power source that only a geeky college freshman (Shia LaBeouf) can locate. The good Transformers join forces with human armies to stop them. Megan Fox costars.

Few expect this “Transformers” to match the staying power of “The Dark Knight” because the new picture, directed by Michael Bay, with Steven Spielberg as executive producer, has received some of the worst reviews of the decade. Roger Ebert’s critique used the terms “horrible,” “unbearable,” “meager” and “music of hell” to describe it. (And that was just in the opening paragraph.)

Drawing particular scrutiny are two new robots, Skids and Mudflap, who talk in jive and are portrayed as illiterate; one has a gold tooth. Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, two of the three credited screenwriters on the movie (the other is Ehren Kruger), have blamed Mr. Bay for the stereotyping. The director has brushed off the criticism in interviews.

Paramount Pictures, which distributed the movie and co-produced it with DreamWorks, noted that ticket sales increased day by day, something that typically demonstrates positive word of mouth.

“Audiences evaluate movies for what they are, and this one is a big, fun visual-effects spectacular,” said Rob Moore, Paramount’s vice chairman. Mr. Moore said he was pleased that the sequel attracted more women than its predecessor did.

The stratospheric results for “Transformers” validate Hollywood’s recent strategy to build more event movies around toys. Paramount will try its luck in August with the big-budget “G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra;” Universal just announced “Stretch Armstrong,” based on the Hasbro action figure.

“Transformers,” which cost well over $200 million to make and market, added electricity to the summer box office, which has slowed down a bit following a robust spring. Total ticket sales for the year stand at about $5.13 billion, a 12 percent increase over the same period last year, according to Hollywood.com, which tracks box office results. Attendance is up 9.4 percent.

“The Proposal,” the Sandra Bullock-Ryan Reynolds romantic comedy from Disney, landed in second place for the three-day weekend with an estimated $18.5 million in sales and a two-week total of $69.1 million, according to box office tracking services. The R-rated Warner Brothers comedy “The Hangover” continued to show strength in its fourth weekend with about $17.2 million (for a new total of $183.2 million). “Transformers” had about $122 million in weekend sales.

Rounding out the top five were “Up” (Disney) with about $13 million ($250 million total) and “My Sister’s Keeper” (Warner), a drama staring Cameron Diaz that opened to a disappointing estimate of $12 million.

Edward Anthony Masen Cullen was born to parents Elizabeth and Edward Masen on June 20, 1901. They are not all children of Carlisle Cullen and his vampire wife Esme, although that is the 'public story'. Jasper was changed by a woman called Maria, who spotted him one night while he was a high-ranking soldier. Alice was changed by a woman who saw her in an asylum and didn't want her to die or suffer.

While Jasper and Emmett's parents remain unknown, Rosalie and Edward talk of their parents occaisionally. Alice is from an asylum and doesn't know who created her nor does she remember her past human life.

Edward is described as being impossibly beautiful. His face is angular and perfect--high cheekbones, strong jawline, straight nose, and beautiful, perfect lips. His hair, which is always in casual disarray, is an unusual bronze shade inherited by his biological mother, Elizabeth. As a human, his eyes were an emerald green. He is said to have a dazzling crooked smile. He stands 6'2", has a slender yet muscular body, and is physically 17 years old.

In the final book, he and Bella Swan marry. While on their honeymoon, she realises that she is pregnant and, after almost being killed by the fast growing baby, she gives birth to their daughter, Renesmee Cullen (A play on Bella's mother Renée and Edward's adoptive mother Esme). Many directors search for, but few find, that elusive intersection of chills and chuckles where Sam Raimi built his early reputation before being swallowed by the cultural weight of the “Spider-Man” franchise. When he made “The Evil Dead” in 1981, he was just 22, an ebullient boy whose movie thrummed with the excitement of its creator. Back then his stampeding camera, over-the-top imagination and cheeky way with foliage felt new and invigorating, a kick in the pants for jaded horror fans and a wake-up call for genre filmmakers.

At a time when horror is defined by limp Japanese retreads or punishing exercises in pure sadism, “Drag Me to Hell” has a tonic playfulness that’s unabashedly retro, an indulgent return to Mr. Raimi’s goofy, gooey roots. More jolting and juicy than the typical PG-13 offering, the movie has a perfunctory plot that centers on Christine (Alison Lohman), a tenderhearted loan officer at a California bank.

Eager to prove to her boss (David Paymer) that she can toughen up in time for a demanding promotion, Christine denies a mortgage extension to a milky-eyed crone with yellow fingernails and matching sputum (a gleefully disgusting Lorna Raver). Later, in the menacing blankness of an underground parking garage, the old woman expresses her displeasure. Flying dentures are only the warm-up.

This early set piece, a breathtaking blur of energetic body slams and artfully deployed office supplies, is much too cartoonish to be repellent. (Only Mr. Raimi can make granny-bashing hilarious.) Emerging from the melee cursed by her elderly foe, Christine spends the remainder of the movie fending off an evil demon and the concerns of her milquetoast boyfriend (Justin Long), an earnest professor tired of returning home each evening to shattered furniture.

As her character arcs from sweet-submissive to deadly determined (and her wardrobe from business chic to mud-drenched T-shirt), her director rushes through a disastrous dinner party and a demented exorcism with giddy velocity, accomplishing more with curling shadows and billowing drapes than with an army of computer-graphics specialists. And if he seems a little too fixated on orifice abuse — Christine’s mouth and nose are repeatedly invaded by things that spurt and slither and suck — his visuals never feel punitive. Mean-spiritedness is not his way.

Swift and sure, “Drag Me to Hell” unfurls in vertiginous, comic-book frames, like a long-lost issue of “Tales From the Crypt.” Neither small humans nor smaller animals are exempt from the carnage, which is orchestrated (by Mr. Raimi and his screenwriting sibling, Ivan) to recall memorable moments in horror-movie history. The most chilling of these is the sight of the old woman’s car (played by Mr. Raimi’s own 1973 Oldsmobile), idling in the parking garage like the malevolent Plymouth Fury of John Carpenter’s “Christine.”

As for Ms. Lohman, she suffers the indignities of the genre like a champ, morphing from mouse to hellion as her expiration date approaches. And while no one will mistake her journey — whose title sounds like a desperate plea from the director’s fan base — for a masterpiece, the movie has a crackpot vitality that breaches our defenses.

In films like “Darkman” and the thematically similar “Spider-Man 2,” Mr. Raimi revealed a gift for merging the human and the fantastic, sustaining poignant love stories in the midst of horror and revenge. His talent is greater than this, but for now this will do.

“Drag Me to Hell” is rated PG-13 (Parents strongly cautioned). A feast of flies, phlegm, fisticuffs and embalming fluid.

The latest from Pixar? Try the inaugural effort from Ilion Animation Studios, an upstart film company in Spain. Hardly anyone in Hollywood has heard of Ilion, but here it comes with a big-time distributor (Sony), a high-profile release date (Thanksgiving) and a kids’ meal tie-in (Burger King).

Computer animation, once one of the most isolated corners of Hollywood, is rapidly becoming one of the most crowded. With the cost of computer animation coming down because of advances in technology and soaring box office receipts for family films, a broad range of new animation players are entering the multiplex.

In 2009 14 animated movies — most of them computer-generated — will have a wide release, compared with 8 such films in 2005. Pictures from independent producers like Imagi Studios, which has “Astro Boy” lined up for an October release, are competing with the likes of “Up,” from Pixar, and “Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs,” set for release on July 1 by 20th Century Fox. Sony’s own computer-animated movie, “Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs,” is scheduled to open on Sept. 18.

“I have lots of respect for Disney and DreamWorks, but I think we are going to easily compete in this marketplace,” said Erin Corbett, president of Imagi Studios USA. “Astro Boy,” based on the popular Japanese manga and television series, is about a young robot with incredible powers.

Even the big boys are ramping up production. Last week DreamWorks Animation said it would increase its output by 20 percent, delivering five films every two years. Coming titles include “How to Train Your Dragon” and “Puss in Boots,” a prequel to the “Shrek” franchise.

When “Toy Story” had its debut in 1995 as the first feature-length computer-animated movie, the new look of the medium was captivating in and of itself. But this filmmaking style is becoming less special as more of it hits the big screen, movie executives say, forcing giants like Pixar and DreamWorks to keep inventing to stand out.

Few would confuse “Planet 51” with one of Pixar’s films — noted for their highly original stories and lavish production values — or a DreamWorks release, which boast A-list stars and dazzling action sequences. “Planet 51” cost about $70 million to produce, according to Ilion, compared with $160 million for the average DreamWorks title.

The independent production companies entering the market just don’t think computer-animated films need to cost that much.

“Pixar and DreamWorks films end up being very expensive because they have to invent it,” said Keith Calder, president of Snoot Entertainment, whose first animated film, “Battle for Terra,” was released in May. “What they do — breakthroughs in rendering hair and water — trickles down to us at reduced cost.”

In addition to leading the way in technology, the Walt Disney Company has inadvertently given a boost to newcomers by eliminating its Happy Meal partnership with McDonald’s as part of a children’s health initiative. So guess who has a major partnership with the fast-food chain? “Astro Boy.”

It’s easy to see what all these upstarts are chasing. In 2008 4 of the top 10 movies at the box office were computer-animated films (“Wall-E,” “Kung Fu Panda,” “Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa” and “Horton Hears a Who!”), which are easier for studios to control than their live-action counterparts.

And the medium is showing signs of expanding beyond the kiddie market. The success of video games has resulted in a generation of adults who are comfortable consuming animated entertainment, Hollywood executives say. One indication: “Coraline,” the sophisticated 3-D picture about an adventurous girl, found an adult audience, so far selling $85.2 million in tickets.

Disney will test this part of the market with “Ponyo” on Aug. 14. This Hayao Miyazaki film is centered on a 5-year-old boy’s friendship with a goldfish that wants to be human. “Sophisticated stories coupled with powerful imaginations and beautiful animation appeals to everyone,” said Kathleen Kennedy, who is co-producing the English version of the film.

Ignacio Pérez Dolset, the chief executive of Ilion, is well known in Europe for his work with video games. Mr. Dolset, via Pyro Studios, introduced its first game title, “Commandos,” in 1998. It reached No. 1 in 17 countries, selling more than 1.5 million copies. He formed Ilion in 2002 and announced “Planet 51” three years later, developing more than 100 computer applications along the way. About 400 people, based mostly in Madrid, have been toiling on the movie.

“Planet 51” tells the story of a cheery American astronaut who lands in a world filled with characters, landscapes and attitudes that bear a humorous relation to the 1950s. Joe Stillman (“Shrek” and “Shrek 2”) wrote the script; Jorge Blanco directed with Javier Abad. (The title is a nod to the secretive military base in Nevada known as Area 51.)

“The film is a recognizable world, yet one that is so unique that we see franchise opportunities everywhere,” Mr. Dolset said. “Around every corner is a new piece of business.”

George Leon, the studio’s executive vice president for worldwide consumer marketing, said, “The quality of animation is truly extraordinary, and we are blown away by the storytelling.”

Of course breaking into this market is easier said than done, something Mr. Calder knows all too well. “Battle for Terra,” distributed by Lionsgate, sold a disastrous $1.6 million in tickets — total — for its theatrical run, even though it got some positive reviews. Mr. Calder blamed the competition. “We learned it is very hard to open against an X-Men sequel,” he said.

Movie Review Terminator Salvation (2009)

“Terminator Salvation”? Really, that’s a bit grandiose. Given the quantities of distressed metal on display in this sturdy and serviceable sequel — only the fourth “Terminator” movie in a quarter-century — “Terminator Salvage” might be a more apt title. Still, some things are saved, even redeemed, in the course of the movie, including, perhaps, the audience’s interest in killer cyborgs from the future and the fate of the Connor family.

A detailed recap of the franchise’s empretzeled chronology will not be possible here. But recall that, way back in 1984, a mean and muscular killing machine, the T-800, showed up in Los Angeles spouting Austrian-accented catchphrases and trying to kill Sarah Connor, who was played by Linda Hamilton. Some of us still harbor fond memories of Ms. Hamilton’s way with a pump-action shotgun, and miss her all the more when her voice is heard on old tape recordings in the new movie, from which she is otherwise absent.

By 1991 and “Terminator 2: Judgment Day” the first terminator had turned friendly, and devoted himself to protecting Sarah’s son, John (Edward Furlong at the time), from another killer android, who was determined to prevent young John from growing into a leader of the anti-machine guerrilla resistance. But John survived, grew into Nick Stahl and has now matured into Bruce Wayne — I mean Christian Bale, all grizzled cheekbones and frayed vocal cords — while the original T-800 runs the State of California.

And that’s without getting into the metaphysics of time travel, the self-updating allegory of technological anxiety, “The Sarah Connor Chronicles” on television or the complex development of a malignant military application called Skynet. Since the last installment, “Rise of the Machines,” a fairly pedestrian action film released in 2003, Skynet, having become “self-aware” (more, perhaps, than the films themselves), unleashed a nuclear holocaust and now wants to wipe out the resistance and the rest of humanity along with it. Eventually it will master time travel, but that will be in a future sequel, which makes the current one an act of extortion by Warner Brothers. If not enough people buy tickets to “Terminator Salvation,” we may never find out just how Arnold Schwarzenegger arrived in California.

After an early bit of foreshadowing set on death row in California in the present decade and featuring a bald Helena Bonham Carter, “Terminator Salvation” plants itself firmly in an apocalyptic future, the terrible year 2018. The death-row inmate, Marcus Wright (Sam Worthington), pops up for reasons that will become obvious to you long before they are revealed to him. He runs into various ragged resistance fighters, significantly including Kyle Reese (Anton Yelchin), who will go back in time to become John Connor’s dad.

Wright also stumbles into a quasi-romance with Blair Williams (Moon Bloodgood), one of Connor’s lieutenants and a character who pays homage to Ms. Hamilton’s pioneering action-heroine achievements. (Bryce Dallas Howard, as Connor’s pregnant wife, upholds the maternal side of the original Sarah Connor legacy.)

The palette is a dull steely gray, coarsened by dust and rust and occasionally illuminated by a bright orange fireball. And the action, in spite of some aerial special effects and a few high-tech battles, is accordingly loud and blunt, a symphony of screaming gears, anguished torque and thumping collisions of metal and flesh. As the floor of the screening room rumbled and the walls seemed to shake, I began to wonder if Skynet were not a subsidiary of the Dolby Laboratories, softening up a few human targets before the big battle.

But the movie, directed by McG (yes, him, the one-named auteur at the helm of the “Charlie’s Angels” pictures) from a script by John Brancato and Michael Ferris, has a brute integrity lacking in some of the other seasonal franchise movies. It parades neither the egghead aspirations of “Star Trek” nor the thick-skulled pretensions of “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” but instead feels both comfortable with its limitations and justly proud of its accomplishments.

Among these are efficient, reasonably swift storytelling — the movie, less than two hours long, is densely populated with semi-important characters and crammed with exposition and incident, but it rarely feels busy or talky — and a mastery of the vernacular of chases, fights, explosions and crashes. McG may not yet have a signature style — he lacks the baroque vulgarity of Michael Bay (“Pearl Harbor” and “Transformers”) or the punchy inventiveness of Brett Ratner (the “Rush Hour” movies and “X-Men: The Last Stand”) — but he manages speed, impact and the choreography of technomayhem with aplomb and a measure of wit.

It has been a long time since the Terminator cycle served as a showcase for state-of-the-art cinematic special effects. The morphing of Robert Patrick’s flesh into metal in James Cameron’s “T2” was something new under the sun, but “Terminator Salvation” seems more like a throwback than a harbinger of things to come. Especially toward the end some shiny, floating video screens appear, but for the most part the aesthetic is mechanical rather than digital. With its clanks and creaks and broken-down contraptions, this movie is a battered Wall-E to “Star Trek’s” sleek and seamless Eve.

Which is fitting, since part of the point of the Terminator movies is to register ambivalence about technological progress, which fills our lives with all kinds of cool, convenient stuff that somehow brings an intimation of our eventual obsolescence. “Terminator Salvation,” digitally engineered to approximate a rough, analog feel, is less a cautionary tale than a consumer advisory. Enjoy your new gadgets, but don’t let them out of your sight, and don’t forget where the off switch is.

Steven Soderbergh shot “The Girlfriend Experience” over a few weeks last fall, with a relatively low budget, a portable high-definition video camera and a mostly nonprofessional cast. The film’s means are modest, not unlike the guerrilla techniques Mr. Soderbergh used in “Che,” but nonetheless “The Girlfriend Experience” has a sleek, tailored look appropriate to its setting, which is the moneyed precincts of Manhattan at the height — and most likely the end — of the recent gilded age. Every frame swims with signs of dearly bought, casually enjoyed luxury as the camera makes its way from high-end boutiques to jewelbox hotels, exclusive restaurants and the cabin of a private plane.

Chelsea (Sasha Grey), the main character — more case study than heroine — is not only a consumer of top-of-the line merchandise, keeping a careful ledger of the clothes and accessories she has purchased and worn. She is also a commodity in this rarefied market, a prostitute whose specialty is alluded to in the title of the movie. She offers her rich clients more than sex with an obliging, pretty young woman. Sometimes there is no sex at all, as when one of them is especially anxious about the collapsing financial system. What she sells instead, or in addition, is a simulation of intimacy.

The first scenes, of Chelsea in the company of a handsome, well-mannered customer, are presented as a kind of optical illusion. For all we know, these two attractive people chatting unhurriedly over dinner, then kissing and sipping wine on the couch before making their way to bed, are lovers of long standing and deep attachment. Only when cash changes hands in the morning do we perceive the transactional nature of the affair.

Up to now Ms. Grey’s screen performances have been almost entirely in hard-core pornography, and this professional background, along with her character’s profession, adds an aura of titillation to the movie. But “The Girlfriend Experience” is less interested in sex than in money, which is shown to be a far more powerful and dangerous source of obsession, confusion, passion and calculation. The movie follows Chelsea from one encounter to the next, and most of those that are not on the clock might be characterized as business meetings and strategy sessions.

She chats with an accountant and also with a curious journalist (played by the New York magazine writer Mark Jacobson), and pays a visit to a creepy sex geek whose Web site rates the services of New York’s escorts and who styles himself the Erotic Connoisseur. (He is played by Glenn Kenny, a film critic and entertainment writer — and thus a cordial screening-room acquaintance of mine — with a combination of grandiose self-regard and theatrical self-disgust that recalls Orson Welles in his Paul Masson wine commercials.) What Chelsea reveals, as she tries to refine her marketing strategies and improve her brand, is not that everyone is a whore — equating capitalism with prostitution would be an easy, moralizing route for the film to take — but rather that everyone is hustling, trying to get a bit of leverage in a tough economic climate.

Chelsea, which might not be her real name, has a live-in boyfriend named Chris (Chris Santos), who works as a personal trainer, tending to the bodies of some of the same kinds of guys who hire Chelsea for her services. The similarities between them are established a little too pointedly, but they are nonetheless thought provoking. Both Chris and Chelsea belong to a sector of the economy that depends on the blurring of certain distinctions, between service and friendship, say, or profit and affection. Therapists, exercise instructors, nannies, manicurists, bartenders — when you think about it, they are all paid for something that can easily be mistaken for love.

“The Girlfriend Experience” traces this potential category mistake in both directions. One john, as he and Chelsea strip down, rhapsodizes about the communication between them, which of course is the basis for any successful relationship. (“Yeah, totally,” she says, slipping between the sheets.) But Chelsea, who experiences a twinge of romantic jealousy — disguised, perhaps, as professional rivalry — when she sees a once-loyal client on the town with another escort, is not immune to such feelings and finds herself drawn to a sympathetic new customer in ways that throw her off balance.

This upsets Chris, and it also puts a crack in the movie’s smooth veneer of cynical indifference. The idea that Chelsea, the girlfriend for sale, is herself succumbing to the false allure of the girlfriend experience, is an interesting one, but neither the script, by Brian Koppelman and David Levien (who also wrote “Ocean’s Thirteen”), nor Ms. Grey’s cool, tentative acting can quite sustain the level of emotional complication necessary to bring it to dramatic life. Mr. Soderbergh’s fractured chronology and chilly, observant style don’t help matters. The film, having mystified Chelsea’s poise and made much of her gift for persuasive artifice, cannot manage the complication of her vulnerability or chart the terrain of her inner life.

And this may be the point, at least in part. “The Girlfriend Experience” is about, and also traffics in, the intoxification of surfaces, and to say it objectifies Ms. Grey, who is very young (just 21) and very pretty, would be more plot summary than critique. Ms. Grey, whose career in pornography has been distinguished both by the extremity of what she is willing to do and an unusual degree of intellectual seriousness about doing it, is not so much acting here as posing a series of philosophical problems, testing the conceptual and experiential boundaries between degradation and empowerment, predator and prey, person and commodity.

The problem is that these questions are more provocative than what the movie does with them. It is by turns tryingly obvious and irritatingly oblique. But I suspect that “The Girlfriend Experience,” which has been available on video on demand for the past month, may look different a few years from now.

Mr. Soderbergh, like Jean-Luc Godard in the second half of the 1960s, is less concerned here with finish or coherence than with an authentic, on-the-fly recording of a moment, and right now that moment — the weeks just before the last presidential election, when the financial system was in midcalamity — is at once too close and too emphatically in the past for it to make a lot of sense. But when the turmoil of the last 12 months has receded and the 10th-anniversary deluxe collectors edition comes around, this strange, numb cinematic experience may seem fresh, shocking and poignant rather than merely and depressingly true.

Kung Fu Panda’ to Become a Series on Nickelodeon ???

Two months ago Nickelodeon, the cable channel, introduced “The Penguins of Madagascar,” a series about the sophomoric sphenisciformes made famous by DreamWorks on the big screen. The result was an overnight hit, a rarity in the hotly competitive children’s entertainment business.

In just six weeks the series is reaching nearly 13 million viewers age 2 to 11 a week, according to Nielsen Media Research. Among cartoons only “SpongeBob SquarePants” delivers stronger ratings for Nickelodeon.

Now the channel is adding “Kung Fu Panda: The Series,” a program built around the DreamWorks smash film from last June. The series, planned for a premiere early next year, will chronicle the further adventures of Po, a portly bear and martial arts master.

“The great thing about working with DreamWorks is that they’ve spent as many as seven years developing these characters,” said Brown Johnson, president of Nickelodeon Animation. “We could hit the ground running.”

Some parents might find “The Penguins of Madagascar” crass — bodily functions figure prominently in the humor — but DreamWorks is thrilled with the creative integrity of the series, said Ann Daly, the studio’s chief operating officer. Critics have been generally supportive.

“We love that television is a way to keep these characters alive with kids every day,” she said.

Jeffrey Katzenberg, the studio’s chief executive, told analysts on April 28 that “a very ambitious” merchandising line tied to “The Penguins of Madagascar” will hit stores in the first quarter of 2010.

DreamWorks has a tortured history with television. In 2004 it produced “Father of the Pride” for NBC, an expensive show modeled on the Las Vegas performers Siegfried & Roy and their menagerie. The program, which had its debut shortly after Roy Horn was mauled by a tiger, was such a flop that Hollywood still winces at its mention.

This time DreamWorks is letting a more experienced hand take the lead. The animation and promotion is handled almost entirely by Nickelodeon, though the channel works closely with the creators of the films.

“The Penguins of Madagascar” stands out in part because Nickelodeon has struggled to develop new hit animation series to match the blockbuster success of “SpongeBob SquarePants” and “Dora the Explorer.” Among live-action programs Nickelodeon has fallen far behind the Disney Channel, though “iCarly” is showing juggernaut potential.

As with “The Penguins of Madagascar,” the “Kung Fu Panda” series will not feature the same celebrity voices as the film. Rather, cheaper sound-alikes will be hired. Jack Black, though, will likely return to voice Po in a big-screen sequel that is planned for 2011; the “Madagascar” franchise will have a third film ready for theaters in 2012.

Cao Cao's mighty army swiftly conquers the southern province of Jingzhou and the Battle of Changban is ignited when Cao Cao's calvary unit starts attacking the civilians who are on an exodus led by Liu Bei. During the battle, Liu Bei's followers, including his sworn brothers Guan Yu and Zhang Fei, give an excellent display of their legendary combat skills by managing to hold off the enemy while buying time for the civilians to retreat. The warrior Zhao Yun fights bravely to rescue his lord Liu Bei's entrapped family, but Lady Gan is killed and Lady Mi, refusing to burden Zhao Yun, kills herself by throwing herself down a well after entrusting Liu Bei's infant son Liu Shan to Zhao Yun.

Following the battle, Liu Bei's chief advisor Zhuge Liang sets forth on a diplomatic mission to Eastern Wu to form an alliance between Liu Bei and Sun Quan to deal with Cao Cao's invasion. Sun Quan was initially in the midst of a dilemma of whether to surrender to resist, but his decision to resist Cao Cao hardens after Zhuge Liang's clever persuasion and a subsequent tiger hunt with his Grand Viceroy Zhou Yu and his sister Sun Shangxiang. He draws his sword and slices off a corner of the table, stating to his subjects, "Whoever who speaks of surrender shall end up like this table!" Meanwhile, Zhuge Liang has also forged a friendship with Eastern Wu's grand viceroy Zhou Yu after finding common interests and knowledge through the birthing of a horse and playing of music. Both of them know that each other's presence is vital to the upcoming war against Cao Cao. Meanwhile, Cao Cao recruits naval commanders Cai Mao and Zhang Yun to lead his navy, while boasting of his army's might. He also mentions that his rationale for the campaign was to take Zhou Yu's beautiful wife Xiao Qiao for himself, apart from eliminating his rivals.

After the alliance is formed, the forces of Liu Bei and Sun Quan call for a meeting to formulate a plan to counter Cao Cao's vanguard army, which is advancing towards Eastern Wu by land at godspeed. The battle then begins with Sun Shangxiang leading a light calvary unit to lure Cao Cao's vanguard army into the Eight Trigrams Formation laid down by the allied forces. Cao Cao's vanguard army is utterly defeated by the allies but Cao Cao shows no disappointment and proceeds to lead his main army to the riverbank directly opposite the allies' main camp at Red Cliff where they set up their camp. While the allies throw a banquet to celebrate their victory, Zhuge Liang thinks of a plan to send Sun Shangxiang to infiltrate Cao Cao's camp and serve as a spy for them. The duo maintain contact by sending messages via a pigeon. The film ends with Zhou Yu lighting his miniaturised battleships on a map based on the battle formation, signifying his plans for defeating Cao Cao's navy.

Episode 2

Sun Shangxiang has infiltrated Cao Cao's camp and she has been secretly noting details and sending them via a pigeon to Zhuge Liang. She is nearly caught one time by a man releasing her pigeon, but he does not suspect her and they become friends. Meanwhile, Cao Cao's army is seized with a plague of typhoid fever which kills a number of his troops. Cao Cao cunningly orders the corpses to be sent to the allies' camp, hoping to pass the plague on to his enemies. The unsuspecting soldiers of allied camp draw in the bodies, and by the time Zhuge Liang has realized the cause of death and ordered them away from the bodies, it is too late and many people contract the disease. The allied army's morale is affected, and eventually a disheartened Liu Bei leaves with his forces while Zhuge Liang stays behind to assist the Eastern Wu forces. Cao Cao hears that the alliance had collapsed and is overjoyed. At the same time, his naval commanders Cai Mao and Zhang Yun propose a new tactic of interlocking the battleships together with chains to minimise rocking when sailing on the river and reduce the chances of the troops falling seasick.

Subsequently, Zhou Yu and Zhuge Liang make plans on how to eliminate Cao Cao's naval commanders Cai Mao and Zhang Yun, and produce 100,000 arrows respectively. They agreed that whoever fails to complete his mission will be punished by execution under military law. Zhuge Liang apparently makes no progress as the deadline for his mission approaches, but actually after examining the weather predicts a heavy fog, allowing him to use an ingenious strategy, known as borrowing of arrows with straw boats, involving merely a small fleet of 20 boats loaded with straw, hay and scarecrows under the cover of the thick fog. Cai Mao and Zhang Yun, believing enemy forces are attacking, order a barrage of arrows to be fired at the boats, after which the allied army brings all but one of the arrow-ridden boats back, sending the last one back to Cao Cao. Zhuge Liang fulfills his goal, bringing in over 100,000 arrows. On the other hand, Cao Cao sends Jiang Gan, who was a former fellow student of Zhou Yu, to the allied camp, in hope that Jiang might persuade Zhou Yu to surrender. Zhou Yu, aware of Jiang's intentions, tricks Jiang Gan into believing that Cai Mao and Zhang Yun are planning to assassinate their lord Cao Cao, using a fake letter and suspicious gestures. Both Zhuge Liang and Zhou Yu's respective plans complement each other when Cao Cao, already furious upon discovering that arrow-ridden decoy boat sent back to him and realizing the arrows were wasted, is told by the spy of Cai Mao and Zhang Yun's apparent treachery. He becomes convinced of his suspicion that his naval commanders are traitors who indeed deliberately "donated" the thousands of arrows to the enemy and are planing to assassinate him. Cai Mao and Zhang Yun desperately plead their allegiance but Cao Cao immediately has them executed. He later suddenly realises his folly but it is too late. Cao Cao, seeing that a North-West Wind is blowing, makes plans to attack the allied forces and set their ships on fire, which will be spread further by the wind.

Meanwhile in the Eastern Wu camp, Sun Shangxiang is uncovered as a spy and is nearly caught, but her friend, who does not believe she is a spy, interferes on her behalf, and after promising to see him again she leaves. She returns with a huge map of Cao Cao's army formations, which she had hidden as a spy by wrapping it around herself. Zhou Yu and Zhuge Liang decide to attack Cao Cao's navy with fire, but realize the current North-East Wind will only push the flames back toward their own ships. Zhuge Liang states that the wind will soon change direction to the South-East which will favor them, and now that Cai Mao was executed, no one else in Cao Cao's camp knows about it. As the Eastern Wu forces made preparations for the fire attack, Huang Gai proposes to Zhou Yu the Self-Torture Ruse to increase their chances of success, but Zhou Yu does not heed it. Before the battle, the forces of Eastern Wu have a final moment together, feasting on glutinous rice balls to celebrate the Winter Festival. Each of the officers gives Zhou Yu a rice ball of his own as a sign of their loyalty.

Meanwhile, Zhou Yu's wife Xiao Qiao, who is actually a reason for Cao Cao's invasion, leaves the Eastern Wu camp secretly and travels to Cao Cao's camp alone. She attempts to persuade Cao from giving up his ambitions to spare the common people of further bloodshed but is unsuccessful. She decides instead to distract Cao Cao and hold his attention instead, to buy time for the Eastern Wu forces to allow the winds to change direction. The signal arrives when the South-East Wind starts to blow and the allied forces launch their full attack on Cao Cao's navy. A bloody battle ensues, in which the allied forces' ships are set on fire and ram into the front of Cao Cao's navy, and with the help of the favorable wind the fire spreads to all of Cao Cao's interlocked ships before they can be separated. Cao Cao is completely taken by surprise, especially when he sees Liu Bei's forces, which apparently left the alliance, attacking his forts on land. The allied forces score a complete victory and by dawn Cao Cao's navy has been completely destroyed and he is left only with his ground army.

The allied forces launch another offensive on Cao Cao's ground army, stationed in his forts, and succeeded in breaking through using testudo formation despite suffering heavy casualties. They score yet another major victory in the second battle, after which the fortress is engulfed in flames. Sun Shangxiang finds her friend in the midst of the battle, but just as they finally come to recognize each other, he is shot by an arrow and killed, leaving Sun Shangxiang shocked and grief-stricken. Zhou Yu and Zhao Yun enter Cao Cao's living quarters but can not find him, and instead are forced to constantly fend off surprise attacks by Cao Cao's hidden guards. They become separated, after which Zhou Yu finally encounters Cao Cao and points his sword at him, but not before Cao Cao and Cao Hong have pointed their swords at him. They emerge from the fortress and find Liu Bei, Zhao Yun, Guan Yu, and Zhang Fei there, as well as Sun Quan who has an arrow aimed at Cao Cao. Meanwhile, Xiao Qiao is chased by Xiahou Jun, who is furious with her for ruining Cao Cao's chances of victory, and taken hostage near the top of the fortress. Cao Cao attempts to force the allied forces to surrender by threatening them with the lives of his hostages. However, Zhao Yun swiftly climbs the fortress and knocks Xiahou Jun away from Xiao Qiao, sending both flying off the railing. Sun Quan then fires his arrow which almost hits Zhou Yu and scratches the top of Cao Cao's head, startling them and allowing Zhou Yu to get free to run and catch his falling wife. Cao Hong is pierced by a lance, leaving Cao Cao alone. Now the situation is reversed and Cao Cao is at the mercy of the allied forces. However, the allied forces decide to spare Cao Cao's life and tell him to leave and never return. Upon seeing Sun Shangxiang kneeling and crying next to her friend's body, Zhou Yu remarks that there is no victor in the battle. The allied forces leave.

Later after peace has returned, as a token of their friendship, Zhou Yu and Xiao Qiao give Zhuge Liang the horse he had helped to birth. Zhou Yu says to Zhuge Liang that they may have to face each other on the battlefield on opposing sides, but the latter replies it is difficult to tell the future, and they leave on good terms.

Jackie Chan is starring in a new movie so violent that its director has decided not to release it in mainland China, which doesn’t have a film ratings system. The film’s director, Derek Yee, who is based in Hong Kong, told The Associated Press on Monday that he had first considered toning down the violence in “Shinjuku Incident” so it could pass censorship in China. But then he decided not to, he said, because he thought it would hurt the integrity of the movie. Mr. Yee said the $25 million Chinese-language movie, in which Mr. Chan plays a refugee who escapes to Japan and becomes a killer for the mob, has scenes that show characters getting a hand chopped off or pierced with knives. “We tried to cut the violent scenes to meet the requirements of the Chinese market,” Mr. Yee said. “But producers I invited to watch that version thought it was incomplete.” Mr. Yee said that Mr. Chan, who invested in the movie, agreed with his decision. “Shinjuku Incident” is to be released in Hong Kong and Southeast Asia on April 2, and in Japan on May 1.

Since the disk with the government information was stolen by Bryce and destroyed in his attempted escape, and since Chuck experiences "flashes" of information from the database activated by certain triggers around him (such as faces, guns, watches, and other objects), he must use the knowledge he now possesses to help the government thwart assassins and international terrorists — upending his previously uneventful life. Situation and plot

The IT Crowd is set in the offices of Reynholm Industries, a fictitious British corporation in central London. It focuses on the shenanigans of the three-strong IT support team located in a dingy, untidy and unkempt basement — a stark contrast to the shining modern architecture and stunning London views enjoyed by the rest of the organisation. The obscurity surrounding what the company does serves as a running gag throughout the series — all that is known is that the company bought and sold ITV and once made part-year profits of "eighteen hundred billion billion". The team consists of what Douglas Reynholm describes as "a dynamic go-getter (Jen), a genius (Moss) and a man from Ireland (Roy)".

Moss and Roy, the two technicians, are portrayed as socially inept geeks or, in Denholm Reynholm's words, "standard nerds". Despite the company's dependence on their services, they are despised, ignored, and considered losers by the rest of the staff. Roy's exasperation is reflected in his support techniques of ignoring the phone in the hope it will stop ringing, and using reel-to-reel tape recordings of stock IT suggestions ("Have you tried turning it off and on again?" and "Are you sure it's plugged in?"). Moss's wide and intricate knowledge of all things technical is reflected in his extremely accurate yet utterly indecipherable suggestions, while demonstrating a complete inability to deal with practical problems like extinguishing fires and removing spiders.

Jen, the newest member of the team, is hopelessly non-technical, despite claiming on her CV that she has "a lot of experience with computers". As Denholm, the company boss, is equally tech-illiterate, he's convinced by Jen's interview bluffing and appoints her head of the IT department. Her official title is "relationship manager", yet her attempts at bridging the gulf between the technicians and the business generally have the opposite effect, landing Jen in situations just as ludicrous as those of her team-mates.

seperti apa rasanya berkencan dengan Julia Perez? Tanyakan saja pada Fendi Trihartanto. Cowok cuek satu ini mengaku beruntung pernah mencobanya meskipun hanya dalam film. Sosok macam itulah porsi yang dilakoninya dalam film Hantu Jamu Gendong, sebuah produk Indika Entertainment yang bakal beredar di bulan Desember 2008 kelak. Coba, apa yang kamu perbuat bersama Jupe?
”Ah, engga kok. Engga ngapa-ngapain, cuma foreplay kok,” seloroh pria kelahiran Jakarta, 5 Februari 1984 ini setengah berkelakar. Entahlah, apa yang dimaksudkan dengan foreplay.

Di film arahan Nayato ini, ceritanya si seksi Jupe menjadi seorang tukang jamu gendong yang diperkosa dan dibunuh sekelompok orang. Akibatnya dia kemudian menjadi hantu. Nah, Fendi sendiri berperan sebagai teman dari orang yang membunuh Jupe. Bisa ditebak, jika akhirnya dia menjadi salah satu yang digoda sang hantu.

”Seru juga tuh adegan ranjangnya. Tapi saya lihat pas proses dubbing, kok scenenya kurang lama ya... hehehe,” demikian ucapnya dengan nada menyesal. Fendi mengaku ketika proses pengambilan gambar terasa lama, namun porsinya saat sudah di film hanya sekejap saja.

The film opens years earlier before the events in the first film. Alakay (later renamed "Alex") is a dimwitted infant lion cub who would rather dance and play around than train with his father, the alpha lion Zuba. Makunga is jealous of Zuba because he is the leader and he ridicules Zuba for having such a pathetic son. Zuba becomes mad and accepts Makunga's fight challenge and he wins. But while he wasn't looking, Alakay had been snatched by hunters. Zuba tries to chase them down but he gets shot in the ear trying to save Alakay. Alakay's crate falls into the ocean and days later he washes ashore in a pre 9/11 New York. He is sent to the zoo and is named Alex. He notices a lion symbol on a statue and imitates it. He becomes a huge hit and years later, as an adult lion, his life leads up to the events in the first film.

The film cuts to the four heroes singing, I Like To Move It and saying goodbye to their lemur friends while taking off in a plane to New York, along with King Julien and Maurice, the chimpanzees, and Mort who did not get into the plane on time, but hangs on to the wing outside as they take off. Later, Alex sees and mistakes Mort for a Gremlin, but when he sees that the Gremlin is Mort, he waves his hand, saying hi, but with Mort raising his hand too, the idiotic lemur falls off the wing. Over the country, they run out of fuel and crash land "safely" in the African plains. The penguins, who controlled the flight say it might take 6 to 9 months to rebuild the plane, and so Alex, Marty, Gloria, and Melman take off to find any help. However, the chimpanzees find help. The animals encounter a tourist car, with New Yorkers sitting in it. Alex recognizes the old lady "Nana" that engaged violently with him at the train station, and they brawl, nevertheless the old lady beats Alex again. Later the humans are carjacked by the penguins as they execute "Operation Tourist Trap".First,Rico stands on an x .When the car hits Rico,he puts red paint on his body and brokes a egg.The second etape is time to the 3 penguins get into the car. The third etape is one of the humans blows into Rico body to make him fly like a ballon and get into the car.They put music,turn on the Land Rover and say good-bay to the humans. However, as they make their getaway, Nana is awoken in the back seat by their "rock n' roll racket" (Boston's "More than a Feeling"). The penguins toss her through the windshield without much ceremony, and then, realizing she isn't dead, reverse the Land Rover and hit her again. Nana, apparently uninjured, leads the rest of the humans off to make camp, saying she doesn't want to stay out in the open because she's "too old to die."

Alex and the rest meet up with a giant group of animals including other lions, hippopotamuses, giraffes and zebras and more. There Alex is reunited with his father and mother. Marty meets an enormous pack of zebras that sound exactly like him, Gloria falls for a hippo named Moto Moto, which means "Hot, hot", who makes Melman jealous, because he has deep feelings for her. Melman becomes the witch doctor for other giraffes so he can stop his species from dying in holes. Before Alex can join the pride he must complete a challenge, which is scheduled the next day. Makunga now has the chance to become the alpha lion by tricking the returning son.

The next day, Alex is told by Makunga that he should choose an opponent called Teetsi, and so he does and the entire pride gasps as the lion walks up to Alex, and Teetsi appears to be a gigantic beefed up lion. Alex mistakes the fight as a dance competition until he is pummeled by Teetsi and humilated by the pride. Because of his defeat, Zuba is forced to banish Alex, but he refuses to do so and instead, gives up his standing of alpha lion to Makunga. Zuba realises his mistake in assuming Alex was a ferocious king when Alex meant to imply he was a celebrity when Alex tells him about the tragic misunderstanding. After Zuba insults Alex saying that he isn't a "real" lion, he walks off offended and depressed.

Meanwhile, Marty shows his zebra herd his spit take. The zebras are amazed and insist on giving it a try. They succeed, doing the exact same thing perfectly. Marty is suprised by this, when his herd explains they are all the same in every single way (up to the point that they are all voiced by Chris Rock.) It questions Marty how unique he really is to his friends. Later this causes Marty to become angry at Alex because he mistook him for another zebra, while Melman argues with Gloria after she says she is going out on a date with Moto Moto that night. The whole gang is separated, forced to live with their fellow herds again. Melman is too shy to admit his feelings to Gloria, but Julien attempts to teach Melman how, and so he takes off to find Gloria and Moto Moto. Gloria thinks it is just an apology and she accepts. Then Melman tells Moto Moto to take great care of Gloria in case of the future he is sure she might have. Meanwhile the lost humans including Nana meet up with another group of people who were also carjacked they build a camp site and worship Nana for her great leadership. As Mort finally washes up on shore only to be pursued by a shark.

The water hole is dried up the next morning, and all the animals panic because they will die of thirst. Makunga doesn't know what to do, but Julien suggests a sacrifice to the water gods from the volcano, in an attempt to return the water supply. Melman decides to volunteer as the sacrifice because he thinks he believes he is terminally ill and only has a few days to live. Gloria is completely surprised by this, and tries to talk Melman out of it. Alex heads out to find what is causing the water hole to dry up, on the way he finds Marty (despite him being within a massive Zebra herd) and apologises, he forgives him and they leave the nature reserve. They find a dam built by the humans blocking the river to the plains. But are ambushed by the humans, Alex is captured, and Marty escapes to tell animals that his friend has been caught. Zuba hears of this, and he runs to try and save him. Melman declines the sacrifice to stay with Gloria when she tells him that she wants him to stay with them, while Marty arrives in the nick of time to tell them about Alex's capture. They need the plane from Skipper, but the chimpanzees (who were recruited to aid in the repairs) were in an argument about time off for maternity leave, eventually blackmailing him with photos of Skipper and a hula doll, finally finishing the plane.

The humans are spit roasting Alex above the fire alive, but Zuba arrives to free him, but Nana attempts to kill Zuba and Alex with a gun, but Alex shows the humans his famous dance moves, and soon enough they recognize the lion as Alex from back at the zoo. Zuba shortly joins in the performance. Everyone is impressed, but Nana still attempts to kill the lions for food. Nana points the gun at Zuba and pulls the trigger, but the bullet is deflected by a large bucket lowered down by the plane carrying the rest of the group. The lions enter and fly off, but before leaving the campsite, they destroy the dam and the water washes back to the pride, who are dying from thirst. Meanwhile at the volcano, Mort arrives still pursued by the shark, which falls into the volcano lava. The lemurs look down into the plains finding the water returning, making them believe the sacrifice worked. Makunga however, refuses to give up the throne and Alex tricks Nana into attacking him, making Zuba and Alex the new alpha lions.

Now that the water is back, the animals can live in peace without Makunga living there anymore. The penguins and chimps decide not to stay as they take off back to New York, and Skipper is married to the bobble-head hula doll. Now part of the pride, Alex, Marty, Gloria, Melman, Julien, Mort and Maurice dance off to their new home along with Zuba and Florrie.

Set in 1992, the pair are both together with their owners as they are about to move to a new home. The moving van is at their old house waiting, and Tom doses in the back of the car. However when he notices Jerry, he puts him on a stick, and Jerry, noticing no escape and knowing that he will fly, he grabs hold of Tom's whiskers so they fly together into the garden. Jerry quickly dashes into his mousehole and locks the door, Tom nailing wooden planks on the door. Tom leaves the house, but it's too late: The owners have left. When Tom tries to get in the moving car, he ends up with a bulldog and ties up his ears so he cannot see. Tom runs into the house for safety and stays there for the night. The next day, Tom notices that the house is being destroyed by a demolition crew. He manages to escape but realizes he couldn't just leave Jerry goes back and saves him, the two manage to survive. But now homeless, they meet a dog named Puggsy and his friend Frankie Da Flea that tries to teach Tom and Jerry to be friends. At this point, something changes in the world of Tom and Jerry. They both start to talk. Then they all agree to have a 'feast' at their place and Puggsy makes a 'buffet' by collecting leftovers in the bin. When Puggsy's tray is crammed, a dogcatcher captures Puggsy and Frankie and lock them in their car.

Tom and Jerry then meet an eight-year old girl named Robyn Starling, daughter of Daddy Starling, whose mother died of pneumonia when she was a baby and is left behind with her horrid and evil guardian Aunt Figg when her dad goes away to Tibet. Robyn runs away after her locket is thrown out the window and that's how she began to run. Jerry said to her that if she runs, her things won't be with her but Robyn said to them that Aunt Figg may seem sweet but she's real mean.

Cut to Aunt Figg crying in the house, scared of losing Robyn. With the help of her evil lawyer, Lickboot and her overweight dachshund, Ferdinand, make a reward of $1,000,000 for the return of Robyn, who they wish to sell for a ransom, engulfed by love of money. Robyn is recaptured, but manages to escape yet again, after Tom and Jerry are kidnapped by Dr. Applecheek and are sent to a city pound where animals are abused. At this point, everybody is looking for the million dollar girl, and Aunt Figg and Lickboot manage to get to Robyn's escape destination first. What was planned as another capture and it only worsens the situation when an oil lamp is knocked on the floor. As the house goes up in flames, luckily Robyn's father arrives and rescues them. Tom and Jerry are taken to a new home where they both promise not to trick each other ever again. But the pair have soon reverted back to their old ways, and the movie finishes with a fun, loving classic scene of Tom chasing Jerry into the distance...or just in their new home.

The film was finished on January 22, 2007. The first part of the film was debuted on Yahoo! Japan as streaming video to Yahoo! Premium members from 16 February to 19 February 2007. On March 3, 2007, the full length featured film had its theatrical premiere at Cinema Rise in Shibuya, Tokyo. The film consists of three segments: Ōkashō (桜花抄), Cosmonaut (コスモナウト), and Byōsoku 5 Senchimētoru (秒速5センチメートル), totaling about an hour of runtime. As in Shinkai's previous works, Tenmon composes for this film's soundtrack. The DVD was released on 19 July 2007.
Plot

The plot is set in Japan beginning from the 1990s and ending in modern day, with each segment centered on a boy named Takaki Tōno. It is important to remember that the first episode takes place during a time period when cell phones are uncommon and e-mail doesn't exist.

[edit] Episode 1: Ōkashō

Ōkashō (Cherry Blossom Extract): Takaki Tōno immediately befriends Akari Shinohara when she transfers to his elementary school. They grow closer to each other due to circumstances; for instance, they both prefer to stay inside during recess due to their seasonal allergies. Because of their similar interests and attitudes, over time they fall in love with each other, although due to their age it's debatable whether they themselves realize it. What is clear is that they form a unique and uncommonly strong bond. They even speak to each other using their given names without any form of honorifics, which is something very unusual in Japan even among people who are romantically involved. (This fact is unfortunately lost in the movie's translation to English and other languages, which significantly reduces the implied closeness between the two.)

Upon graduating from elementary school, Akari moves to Tochigi due to her parents job. The two keep in contact by writing letters, but despite the special feelings that exist between them, they inevitably begin to drift apart. When Takaki becomes aware that his family will be moving to Kagoshima, he decides to go see Akari since they will be too far apart to visit each other at all after he moves. However, when the day arrives, a severe snowstorm continually delays Takaki's trip, and it will be hours before he reaches the station where Akari is waiting for him. The two finally meet late that night and, as they share their first kiss, Takaki realizes that the two will never be together again. Stranded in a shed due to the snowstorm, the two fall asleep talking to each other late into the night. Takaki departs the next morning, and although they promise to continue writing each other, both silently acknowledge that their relationship with the other has effectively been ended.

[edit] Episode 2: Cosmonaut

Takaki is now in the third year of senior high in Tanegashima, where the Tanegashima Space Center is located. Kanae Sumida, a classmate of Takaki, has a strong crush on Takaki, but she does not have the courage to express her feelings to him. She spends all the time she can with him, even waiting long periods of time after school so they can walk home together. Any reasonable person would notice how obvious her feelings are for him, but Takaki seems blind to them, regarding Kanae as simply a good friend. Over time she observes that Takaki is always staring off into the distance, as if searching for something far, far away. Despite her feelings for Takaki, Kanae believes that he is searching for things far greater than anything she can offer. As in the first story, this segment concludes with Takaki again leaving his home behind because of his parents' jobs, apparently numb to any regrets for leaving Kanae or anyone or anything else behind.

[edit] Episode 3: Byōsoku 5 Centimeter

It is now 2008, and all three characters have gone their separate ways. Takaki is now a computer programmer in Tokyo, and Akari is preparing to get married. Kanae has presumably also moved on with her life. Takaki still seems to be longing for Akari to the detriment of his lifestyle and his other relationships, including a girlfriend he has been with for three years. Akari, while going through some old things, finds a letter she wrote to Takaki but never sent. She feels nostalgic for those days but has moved on with her life. On the verge of a breakdown, Takaki quits his job and tries to finally begin to take control over his life for the first time.

One day while walking down a road, Takaki comes to a railroad crossing. He passes a woman on the railroad crossing, and he stops on the other side of the tracks when he realizes what a strong resemblance she bore to Akari. He turns around to see that the person on the other side has also stopped and then also begins to turn around, but both are cut off from getting a good view of the other by two trains which cross on the tracks. Takaki waits for the trains to pass, expecting the woman he had seen to be waiting on the other side of the railroad crossing. After both trains have passed, he is disappointed to see that the woman is nowhere to be found. With a slight smile, he turns around and walks away.

A few decades in the future, a mercenary named Toorop (Vin Diesel) accepts a contract from a Russian mobster, Gorsky, who instructs him to bring a young woman only known as Aurora (Mélanie Thierry) to New York. In order to reach his goal, Gorsky gave Toorop a variety of weapons as well as a UN passport that has to be injected under the skin of the neck. Toorop, along with the girl and her guardian nun Sister Rebeka (Michelle Yeoh), travel from the Noelite Convent where they lived across Russia to reach America.

The towns and cities of Russia have been turned into dangerous, over populated slums by war and terrorist activity, forcing Toorop, Aurora, and Rebeka to face dangers of the human element, all the while fleeing from an unknown group of mercenaries claiming to have been sent by Aurora's supposedly dead father. The stress of humanity's situation causes Aurora to act out in strange ways that neither Toorop, nor Rebeka can explain. On one such occasion, Aurora seemed, for no reason, to panic and run from a crowded train station, just before it was bombed.

Later, they were forced to board a submarine that carried refugees to Canada. There were too many refugees to take at once, so the submarine was forced to leave some behind, even if it came to shooting them. Aurora, infuriated by the loss of life, suddenly knew how to operate the thirty year old submarine, without having ever learned about it.

Sister Rebeka explains to Toorop that Aurora could speak nineteen different languages by the age of two, and always seemed to know things she had never learned. When, three months before leaving with Toorop, she had begun acting out in ways she never had before. This occurred after a visit by a Noelite doctor who had administered a pill to Aurora. The doctor told her to go to America, and arranged for Toorop to take them.

Once in New York, a news broadcast about the bombing of the Convent that Aurora and Rebeka hail from, caused the group to realize that there was more going on then they knew. Gorsky, working for the Noelites, had planted a tracking device in Toorop's passport, and then bombed the convent when he knew they were in America. The doctor who earlier saw Aurora in the convent then appears to examine her again. When he leaves, Aurora reveals (again without being told) that she is pregnant with twins, even though she was a virgin.

Looking outside, Toorop saw both Gorsky's men, as well as the Noelite group, heavily armed and waiting for them. The High Priestess then calls Toorop and asks him to bring Aurora outside. Just before they take her away, Toorop changes his mind and starts a firefight with the two groups with the ultimate goal of getting the two women to safety. However, because of the tracking devices, Gorsky's men can lock onto him with tracking rockets. Rebeka gets shot and killed defending Aurora, who in turn shoots Toorop saying the words "I need you to live." By dying, the rocket goes off target and hits Aurora instead.

Toorop's body was revived by Dr. Arthur Darquandier, using advanced medical techniques that involved replacing his right arm with cybernetics to undo the damage of being dead for over two hours. Darquandier explaines that when Aurora was a fetus, he genetically enhanced her by using a super computer to 'implant' intelligence into her brain. It is also implied that the Noelite group had him create Aurora to become pregnant at a certain time in order to use her as a 'virgin birth' for their religion.

After she was born, the Noelites had him assassinated, or so they thought. He remained 'dead' until he found his daughter in Russia with Toorop.

Doctor Darquandier then instructed Toorop to find Aurora before the Noelites could, which he does. Aurora dies giving birth to two children of two different colors, whom Toorop raises as his own.

The Dark Knight is a 2008 American superhero film directed and co-written by Christopher Nolan. Based on the DC Comics character Batman, the film is part of Nolan's Batman film series and a sequel to 2005's Batman Begins. Christian Bale reprises the lead role. The plot of the film focuses on Batman's fight against a new villain, the Joker (Heath Ledger), and his relationships with police lieutenant James Gordon (Gary Oldman), district attorney Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart) and his old friend and love interest, assistant D.A. Rachel Dawes (Maggie Gyllenhaal). For his conception of the film, Nolan was inspired by the Joker's first two appearances in the comics and Batman: The Long Halloween. The Dark Knight was filmed primarily in Chicago, as well as in several other locations in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Hong Kong. Nolan used an IMAX camera to film some sequences, including the Joker's first appearance in the film.

On January 22, 2008, after he had completed filming The Dark Knight, Ledger died of a sleeping pill overdose, leading to intense press attention and memorial tributes from lots of fans as well as more people showing interest to the film. Warner Bros. had created a viral marketing campaign for The Dark Knight, developing promotional websites and trailers highlighting screen shots of Ledger as the Joker, but after Ledger's death, the studio refocused its promotional campaign.[2][3] The film was released on July 16, 2008 in Australia, on July 18, 2008 in North America, and on July 24, 2008 in the United Kingdom. Prior to its box office debut in North America, record numbers of advance tickets were sold for The Dark Knight. It was greeted with positive reviews upon release,[4] and became the second movie ever to earn more than $500 million at the North American box office, setting numerous other records in the process.
In Gotham City, the Joker robs a mob-owned bank with his accomplices, whom he tricks into killing each other. That night, a trio of Batman impersonators interrupts a meeting between mobsters and the Scarecrow. The real Batman appears and apprehends all of the criminals and impostors, but suffers injuries from dog bites, leading him to re-design his batsuit. Batman and Lieutenant James Gordon contemplate including new district attorney Harvey Dent in their plan to eradicate the mob, as he could be the public hero Batman cannot be. Bruce Wayne runs in to Rachel Dawes and Dent, who are dating, and after talking to Dent he decides to host a fundraiser for him.

When mob bosses meet to discuss Batman, Gordon, and Dent, a Chinese mafia accountant, Lau, informs the gang leaders that he has hidden their money to pre-empt a plan Gordon has hatched to seize the mobsters' funds, and fled to Hong Kong to escape Dent's jurisdiction. He also informs them that one of their deposits, worth $68 million, was stolen by the Joker. The Joker arrives unexpectedly, offering to kill Batman in return for half of the mob's money, but the offer is refused. After Batman abducts Lau in Hong Kong and delivers him to the Gotham City police, the mobsters agree to hire the Joker. The Joker tells Gotham that if Batman does not turn himself in to the police and publicly reveal his identity, people will die each day. When Commissioner Gillian B. Loeb and the judge presiding over the mob trials are murdered, Wayne decides to reveal his identity. Before he can, Dent announces that he himself is Batman and is arrested as part of a plan to draw the Joker out of hiding. The Joker attempts to ambush the police convoy carrying Dent, but Batman and Gordon intervene and arrest him; in recognition of his actions, Gordon is appointed police commissioner.

Later that night, when Dent and Rachel disappear, Batman interrogates the Joker at the police station, who reveals that they have been captured by corrupt police and placed in warehouses rigged with explosives on opposite sides of the city; they are far enough apart that Batman cannot save them both. Batman leaves to save Rachel, while Gordon and the police head after Dent. With the help of a bomb planted at the police station, the Joker escapes with Lau. Having been deceived by the Joker, who gave him reversed addresses, Batman arrives at Dent's location in time to save him, but the left side of Dent's face is burned in the resulting explosion. Gordon does not arrive in time to save Rachel and she dies. In the hospital, Dent is driven to madness over the loss of Rachel. After burning Lau atop a pile of the mob's money, the Joker goes to the hospital and convinces Dent to exact revenge on the corrupt cops and mobsters responsible for Rachel's death, as well as Batman and Gordon.

Dent goes on a personal vendetta confronting the cops and mobsters one by one, deciding their fates with the flip of a coin. The Joker announces to the public that anyone left in Gotham at nightfall will be subject to his rule. With the bridges and tunnels out of the city closed due to a bomb threat by the Joker, authorities begin evacuating people by ferry. The Joker places explosives on two of the ferries—one ferry with convicts, the other with civilians—telling the passengers the only way to save themselves is to trigger the explosives on the other ferry; otherwise, he will destroy both at midnight.

Batman locates the Joker, and subdues him but refuses to kill him. Meanwhile, the Joker's plan to destroy the ferries fails after the passengers on both decide not to destroy each other. The Joker acknowledges that Batman is truly incorruptible, but that Dent was not, and his madness has been unleashed upon the city. Leaving the Joker for the SWAT team, Batman leaves in search of Dent. At the remains of the building where Rachel died, Batman finds Dent holding Gordon and his family at gunpoint. Dent judges the innocence of Batman, himself, and Gordon's son through three coin tosses. As a result of the first two flips, he shoots Batman in the abdomen and spares himself. Before Dent can determine the boy's fate, Batman, who was wearing body armor, tackles him, and they both fall over the side of the building — Dent appears dead. Batman and Gordon realize that the morale of the city would suffer if Dent's murders would become known. Batman persuades Gordon to preserve Dent's image by holding Batman himself responsible for the murders. Gordon destroys the Bat-Signal, and a manhunt for Batman ensues.

Rozen Maiden (ローゼンメイデン, Rōzen Meiden?) is a manga by the group Peach-Pit, with an anime series of the same name.[1] The story centers around Sakurada Jun, a young hikikomori boy that finds himself indebted to a living doll by the name of Shinku. Jun's sometimes comedic, sometimes dramatic, experiences with Shinku--as well as the other six dolls of the Rozen Maiden--slowly bring him out of his depression and back into the world that he had abandoned.

In TV Asahi's "Top 100 Anime Ranking" polled in 2006, Rozen Maiden was ranked 9th on the list. [2]

The Super Dimension Fortress Macross: Do You Remember Love? (超時空要塞マクロス　愛・おぼえていますか Chō Jikū Yōsai Makurosu: Ai Oboete Imasu ka?) is an anime movie based around the Macross television series.

The movie is a condensed version of the events in the first Macross series, with new animation. The storyline of the movie does not fit directly into the Macross chronology, and was originally an alternate-universe retelling of the story, but was later retconned as part of the Macross universe. Within the Macross universe, however, it is a popular movie (ie. a movie within a television series), a fact shown in Macross 7. In Macross tradition, it features transforming mecha, pop music, and a love triangle. The movie gets its name from its romantic themes and also by the song sung during its climatic battle sequence by Lynn Minmay (voiced by Mari Iijima).

Plot

The plot revolves around Hikaru Ichijyo (a hotshot pilot) and his love triangle with the coquettish pop-star Lynn Minmay and the fortress' first mate Misa Hayase. This story is framed by a war between humans and the alien Zentradi over possession of the space fortress Macross, which harbors tens of thousands of human civilians after the aliens bombarded Earth. However, it is revealed that the all-male Zentradi are fighting a war against their female counterparts: the Meltlandi; both genders, bred for war, are eventually stricken by their contact with Protoculture (human culture), particularly due to music and love.

Heroes Season 3 Movie Review

Well kids HEROES is back and this time its not so plain Jane and it sure as heck isnt the drivel that was Season 2. Yes Heroes Season 3 is all about the action, all about the Villains and all about throwing more cork screws your way then you can beat a dog with. I wont be spoiling anything in this review of the show so you are safe to read if you have not yet watched it.

It was somewhat hard for me to follow Season 3 since I abandoned Season 2 half way through since it was sinking like a boat full of rats. It was just that bad. The first 45minutes of Season 3 are better then the entire Season 2 combined. That should give all of you fans who left the show reason to go back just like I did.

Season 3 brings back all our favorite characters including Peter ( the one from the future who is all scarred and jaded ) , Sylar, Claire and the rest of the gang. The series wastes no time jumping into high gear as it starts in the future with Claire holding a gun to Peter and then shooting him. A dramatic and suspensefull opening that pretty much sets the tone for the entire two part show.

All of the main characters worlds are turned upside down. Peter finds himself looking for water... or facing death. Hiro finds himself in conflict as he goes to the future and finds out how he will meet his end and Peter alters the future throwing the lives of all his friends away. Add to that Claire's run in with a certain super-villain and you have yourself a super starter to what could be a fantastic season of Heroes.

Sylar is back and up to his evil ways trying to collect powers and we have a mix of new characters who are both good and bad. We have a french thief who moves at the speed of sound and a whole slew of INMATES held in special quarantine that get an opportunity to reek havoc. As good as Season 3 started off the look at next weeks episode looks even cooler with Sylar's character taking a MASSIVE MASSIVE twist that will make everyones heads spin. All and all, fantastic start to a season and one that I will stay glued to for at least a few more episodes.

Shaman King (シャーマンキング Shāman Kingu?) is both an anime series and a manga series by Hiroyuki Takei. The manga ended prematurely in Japan with 32 volumes in total. The anime concluded its run with a total of 64 episodes.

The Shaman King series started in Shueisha's Weekly Shōnen Jump in Japan, eventually leading to the creation of an anime series, which was directed by Seiji Mizushima, co-produced by TV Tokyo, Nihon Ad Systems and Xebec and aired on TV Tokyo.

A shaman is someone who connects this world and the spirit world. In Shaman King, shamans team up with ghosts and spirits to achieve their goals. The greatest dreams of a shaman is to become the Shaman King, who is able to contact the Great Spirit (the spirit that every soul will eventually go back to) in order to be the savior of the world. Various magical and religious terms are spread through out the story but they merge into something explainable by the time the main plot arrives.

Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit (精霊の守り人 Seirei no Moribito?) is the first in the ten volume Guardian (守り人 Moribito?) series of Japanese fantasy novels, written by Nahoko Uehashi. It has since been adapted into numerous media, including radio, manga and anime adaptations.

The series has been adapted into an anime television series, produced by Production I.G and directed by Kenji Kamiyama, which premièred in Japan on NHK from April 7, 2007. It is based entirely on the first novel in the Guardian series, and greatly expands the midsection of the novel.

Plot

Balsa the spearwoman is a wandering warrior, who takes on the task of saving lives in atonement for a past sin. On her journey, she happens to save a prince and is tasked with becoming his bodyguard. And he is going to need one, for his own father, the emperor, wants him dead.

Samurai Champloo (サムライチャンプルー Samurai Chanpurū?) is a Japanese animated television series consisting of twenty-six episodes. It was broadcast in Japan from May 20, 2004 through March 19, 2005 on the television network, Fuji TV. Samurai Champloo was created and directed by Shinichirō Watanabe, whose previous television show, Cowboy Bebop, earned him renown in the anime and Japanese television communities.[1] The show was produced by studio Manglobe.

The word, champloo, comes from the Okinawan word "chanpurū" (as in gōyā chanpurū, the Okinawan stir-fry dish containing bitter melon).[2] Chanpurū, alone, simply means "to mix" or "to hash." Therefore, the title, Samurai Champloo, may be translated to "Samurai Remix" or "Samurai Mashup."[3]

Plot

Ballad of a Shinigami (しにがみのバラッド。 Shinigami no Baraddo.?), subtitled momo: the god girl of death, is a Japanese light novel series written by K-Ske Hasegawa, with illustrations by Nanakusa. The first novel was released on June 10, 2003, and as of March 10, 2008, eleven volumes have been published by MediaWorks under their Dengeki Bunko label. The novels have been licensed by Seven Seas Entertainment for release in English with the first novel released in March 2008. The series revolves around Momo, a shinigami, and her familiar Daniel, a talking black cat, as they interfere with the world of the living.

A six-episode anime adaptation of the series produced by Group TAC aired between March and April 2006 on WOWOW satellite TV.

An animated film was first announced after the ending credits of the last episode of the first anime series. The movie was released in Japanese theaters on April 21, 2007 as one of the three movies released at Dengeki Bunko's Movie Festival.[16] The movie is not a sequel to the anime, but is an adaptation of all the events in the first novel and contains events that were not in the anime series. The DVD was released on September 21, 2007 in two different editions, the special edition including the director's cut version, the original version and extra material, and the normal edition including only the director's cut version.[1]

Plot Summary:

L is recruited to save humanity from a deadly virus that wiped out a whole Thai village and his friend F. His opponents are K and a twisted environmental group who want to "cleanse" the world of it's excess population with the deadly virus. His accomplices are two young children - a English speaking boy who's the only survivor of the virus infected Thai village; and a Japanese school girl who's the child of the Professor who developed the virus antidote. His FBI partners are Watari, and Sugura who joins later as a brief comical decoy for L on the run.
